Could your child be a world champion in their chosen sport? What does it take to get them there? We talked with Olympic medalist (and parent)(and OpenWater member) to get her take on what it takes to raise an elite athlete.
After competing on the highest possible competitive levels, Picabo founded the Picabo Street Academy - a new kind of school built around the schedules young elite athletes must maintain.
In this chat, Picabo shares her thoughts on:
When kids should really start to focus on one sport
The big determining factor that separates elite athletes from others
How coachable parents need to be in order for their child to succeed
Whether your child wants to go for the gold, or you just want them to enjoy club sports, Picabo's insights will help ensure you and your kid have the best experience.

The combination of proximity, school and limited freedom made making friends as a kid easy. But when you're an adult, bogged down with responsibilities and time constraints -- finding friends is a lot trickier.
Loneliness is an epidemic that the US Surgeon General has literally warned us about! So what can we do?
Dr. Adam Dorsay, psychologist and host of the SuperPsyched podcast (and forthcoming book of the same name) sat down for the OpenWater Wise Up! podcast to talk about why it's difficult to make friends the older we get and how we can get better at it. We talk about the fear of rejection, how we may want to re-define "friend" and some easy steps to meeting people (get a dog!).

Buying wine doesn't have to be so nerve wracking. It should be fun, exciting and even affordable. To help, we brought in sommelier and owner of Heathen Wine Tours, Heath Porter.
Heath grew up in a teetotaling family in a trailer park in Alabama before leaving home to embark on his own vino journey, earning national awards and prestigious positions at high-end resorts such as Sea Island Resort in Georgia and The Greenbrier in West Virginia. After opening his own restaurants in Miami, Heath launched Heathen Wine Tours, taking small groups to fine wineries around the world. He also created Heathen Wines, his own craft wine label.
In this talk, Heath offers straightforward advice for buying wine (avoid the middle shelf at the grocery store), introduces you to lesser-known-but-amazing wine regions (hello, Barsac!), and why you should look at the alcohol content when selecting wine.
Even better for OpenWater members, Heath is bringing his somm talents to our platform, helping head up our own OpenWater wine channel, where he'll answer questions and make recommendations.

Some people may cringe at the thought of "networking." It can feel so transactional. So baldfaced.

But it doesn't have to! Our guest on this special episode of the Wise Up! podcast is Karen Wickre, who literally wrote the book on the subject -- Taking the Work Out of Networking. We sat down to talk with her about why networking is so important beyond just job searching, why you need the right mindset going into it, and why it is definitely not a numbers game.

Karen will be the special guest at an upcoming OpenWater event in San Francisco on July 11th, where she will walk us through how to be better at networking! If you are interested in becoming an OpenWater member, visit OpenWater.group to learn more.

If you run a business, no matter how big or small, you should introduce yourself to your elected representatives. That tip is from Michael Robinson, Chairman & CEO of The Montgomery Strategies Group, a government relations and communications firm. Doing so, he argues, allows you to show what value you are bringing to your district. It also means your first contact with said representative isn't you asking for something.
We dive into the ins and outs of talking to Washington -- without talking politics. It's an informative chat that might just save your business time and energy as you grow.
The Wise Up podcast is your weekly dose of business wisdom from OpenWater a new community and platform that connects midlife professionals with new opportunities.
